Windows Terminal Server
Windows Terminal Server provides a single physical box (a server) that multiple users can login to, each receiving their own virtual desktop. This means that the PC (or Mac) they are sitting at is only acting as a keyboard, mouse and monitor. All the work is being done by the server at the other end.
Working like this has several advantages:
- Users can access their virtual desktop from anywhere in the world
- Access to network files is comparatively fast, even when working on the other side of the world
- Applications like Outlook, Word, databases etc need only be installed once (subject to license)
- PC's accessing the Terminal Server need only be of minimal specification
In short, a Terminal Server is a fantastic remote access solution and a means of reducing expenditure on workstations and administrative support. Its only real shortcoming is working on high quality images and multimedia which many organisations only rarely (if ever) do.
